Julie Anne
Julie Anne Shapiro is an international performing artist, peace ambassador and educator creating truth provoking and dynamic work. She was born to an Ashkenazi Jewish family, raised in Upstate New York, and has lived, studied and worked across the US and throughout the world. As a multidisciplinary performer, Julie's work weaves together various theatrical, musical and dance forms along with improvisational exploration and energetic alchemy. Her passion is in creating art that inspires conscious somatic listening, inviting all participants into the erotic nature of beingness. Julie is also a vocal sound healer and ritualist, rites of passage facilitator for women, educator for youth and community organizer.
Her collaborative investigations involve a creative process that is rooted in self growth and social renewal, including conscious community development. Being authentic, generous and ethically aware is the essence of Julie's art work and education. Her current research involves culturally diverse intersections of music, movement and storytelling with a focus on societal transformation.
Julie holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from SUNY Fredonia. After her formal education, she moved to Savannah, GA in 2019 where she performed in musical & devised theatre and independent film, choreographed (an on stage witches' ritual) for a local theatre company and began her practice of somatic healing. In Spring 2020, Julie nearly made her Off-Broadway debut as Anne Frank in Anne Frank: A Musical at the Actor’s Temple Theatre but the universe had other plans, as it was shut down opening night due to COVID-19. During the pandemic, Julie continued creating and collaborated with a dedicated team of women to create an original web series titled, “Asymptomatic,” inspired by realities of pandemic dating in Rochester, NY.
From Winter 2021- Autumn 2022, Julie lived nomadically in the Pacific NW, working in sustainable agriculture with communities (human and ecological) across the coast while deepening an earth-based spiritual practice that continues to inspire her art and lifestyle today. Throughout her travels, Julie developed a musical improvisational practice with her musical partner, Brayden Schmick, and fellow troubadours she met along the way.
Now based in Santa Fe, NM where she has lived since 2022, Julie is a company member of Theatre Grottesco, Santa Fe Classic Theatre and Tri-M Productions. In May 2023, she devised a one woman show, “Coming Home to Herself,” produced by Tri-M. While in the southwest, Julie has also trained in Action Theatre with Ruth Zaporah. She is currently studying jazz vocals with Dr. Diane Richardson of Berklee School of Music.
Alongside her performance life, Julie is a certified Vocal Sound Healer with the VSH Academy led by Dr. Gwendolyn McClure and currently leads workshops, private sessions and ceremonies for a diverse range of clients around the world. She is also a member of the Jewish Storyteller’s Guild led by Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb. Guided by her Jewish ancestry, Julie actively practices earth-based diasporic Judaism and is on a journey of becoming a Hebrew priestess, songstress and ritualist. A lifetime student and educator, Julie continues to learn through teaching tap at NDI Dance Barns, theatre in schools across New Mexico and voice in her private studio, "Embodied Expression."
Julie was an Artist in Residency with OYL Theatre Company in India, Japan and Greece during the Summer 2024 where she practiced ancient theatre techniques and performed in Ellen McLaughlin's rendition of "Oedipus" as the Leader of the Chorus. She continued to study vocal techniques, spiritual practices and sustainable agriculture around the world while traveling for an additional 4 months throughout the U.K., EU and Northern Africa.
Her current projects include developing a jazz trio of improvisational jazz and nature inspired standards, devising a performance based on her international travels and facilitating a strong cohort of female teenagers in a Peace Ambassador Program with Tomorrow's Women, a peacebuilding organization for females in Palestine, Israel and the USA.
